The assault on Jack Grealish brought back painful memories for Chris Kirkland, who was famously attacked by a fan at Hillsbrough in 2012.On an ugly day for English football, Aston Villa captain Grealish was punched from behind by Birmingham fan Paul Mitchellin a horrendous attack at St Andrews on Sunday.And Kirkland, the former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, was the victim of a similar attack by a pitch invader during a Championship match seven years ago.Leeds fan Aaron Crawley was jailed for six months for striking Kirkland in the face, leaving him in need of treatment, and the ex-Liverpool man admits the incident had a lasting effect on him.2

I didnt know what had happened and I was gutted because wed just let a goal in. It did hurt.There were still 15/20 minutes of the game to go. Jacks done great to carry on. Mitchell, 27, pleaded guilty to charges of pitch invasion and assault at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today.The Grealish incident was just one of several which shamed British football over the weekend.An Arsenal fan was arrested after invading the pitch and confronting Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, while Rangers captain James Tavernier was forced to fend off an aggressive Hibs fan.And footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones has also told talkSPORT the level of security in this country is woefully inadequate.
